Sometimes they'll eat them if the mothers are scared to death, think they might have to leave soon, and know it will be easier to run without trying to carrying them all.

Sometimes one baby is defective and will not be successfull. So the other babies in the group doen't get sick from the one dead babie, the mother just eats it. It keeps the nest clean.

Either someone in your family handled the babies or the mother is just not ready.

Sometimes they will eat babies that are unhealthy and wouldn't survive anyways, or else they eat them if they cannot take care of them all.

You don't feed it enough, and it has no choice but to eat its own young
