I've noticed there are some people who live above restaurants or movie theatres. How does that work?

I believe some work at the theatre or restaurant instead of paying rent, but how does one find such vacancies?

The people I know that live about restaurants pay rent just like anyone else. There is a back staircase so the people don't have to walk through the establishment. The bad part about it is the traffic, the noise of the place below, them being more strict on your noise so that you don't disrupt their customers.
