I went about 3 weeks ago and had my lip pierced at a very highly recommended tattoo parlor. The girl was GREAT! I got a stud and have had no problems at all. Hardly any swelling occured. But its long enough so that even if it had swollen a lot there would still be room to clean. Anyways, she told me to swish with Listerine 2 times a day and use only soap and water on the outside 2 times a day. I did use the Listerine(probably 3 times a day), but I used peroxide on the outside gently swiping around the stud with a Q-tip. It has already healed. I am still going to wait another week to switch out. She also said that pus is normal and part of the healing process, but to be concerned if it changes from a white/light yellow to a green color. Just something to look out for! Oh, and I found it awkward at first to eat, but ate the foods I normally ate right away. Water to drink is best. And after eating, rinse mouth out with water right away...or I did. Good luck!

Out of all the piercings I've had the one thing I've been sure to remember is, keep it clean and don't do anything that feels or looks like it probably isn't the right thing to do. If you second guess it, don't do it. If you give it the right amount of time to heal....as tormenting as that may be... you'll be better off. A lot of people use hydrogen peroxide, does it work...yes...BUT, it also dries out your wounds and you have to be careful. DONT over do it. Use a qtip to apply and kill the germs that may affect the area, again if you over use it you'll dry out the area. Same with salves except the opposite direction, don't over use those or they'll get too goopy...no one likes goopy. yuck.
Kissing, drinking, give it a bit of time. Drinking alcohol thins the blood and increases bleeding. I gave it 3 days for some and a week for others, lip I'd give a few days, a little less than they advised but by then I was fine. You may be different. Like I said, go with how it feels (go with your gut) and be patient. Oh, as far as eating... dont eat anything citrus or spicy while it's healing, that will hurt!!

A side note, your previous responder had a great point, hoop is the way to go for swelling.

Ok, first of all when you get your lip pierced, get a ring not a stud. Your lip swells and the stud can start to protrude into the piercing hole making the healing time longer. You can eat anything. You need to rinse with mouth wash 3 times daily [[ ALCOHOL FREE]]. Do not apply peroxide, alcohol or anything like that, it can increase the time to heal, and can make your wounds worse. This was the first thing my piercer told me after he pierced me.
For me, I couldn't eat the first 2 days. but after that I was able to eat small things. 3-4 weeks is when you can start drinking/smoking/kissing. But I would wait until it is completely healed. it took me a few months but you prolly don't wanna wait that long, hehe.

mami hi I understand that piercing is a very personal choice . But why your lip or the mouth area I will never understand . What happen to the ear, belly button, eye brow, nose or so many other places we have to choose from . Our body's are a virtual pin cushion .. I once tried kissing with a woman that had her mouth pierced . It was not a pleasant experience .. It also hindered oral sex .. I was actual wounded well anyway ...
Talking about infections I knew a relative that got a very bad mouth infection from piercing .. Went into her gums the dental work was very expensive . And took several weeks to clear up ... oh well good luck
