it's a four hour movie, so it gets kind of hard to keep track of what's going on. okay, so, i know the very very end.. the family runs off to the hills or something. but why do they have to do it in the first place? something to do with nazis? i wish the ending wasn't so ethical and political. anyway, if anyone would care to explain. feel free to. thanks! :D

The father received a telegram from the Nazi's that he was drafted into the Nazi navy. He hates Nazis. He worries that they stay and die or he goes and serves for an unconsciousable cause. He decides to run to Switzerland with the family. They are stopped so they go to the planned concert and sneak away from there...to the convent to hide...and to Switzerland; a neutral country where the Nazis can't get them

The family was living in Austria--when WWII started, the Nazis took over Austria. Mr. Von Trapp was going to be recruited into the Nazi Military--the Third Reich. The night of the singing showcase, the family escaped over the mountains. That's what you see at the end of the movie. Kind of hard not to make it political when you are talking about WWII.

Hollywood had to dramatize the ending because what really happened was Captain Von Trapp wrote the army a letter stating that he believed himself too old to serve again (really he disagreed with the Nazis), and then the family hoped on a train and moved away. They had to make out like some real life and death drama happened which is why you see them hiding in the convent and then "escaping" over the mountains.

Where the heck did you come up with 4 hours!? It's 174 minutes long. That's not even quite 3. It is still a long movie, but it isn't 4 hours!

The movie's plot is actually quite simple. Mr. Von Trapp doesn't want to participate in the Nazi regime. So they flee. The end. It is based, loosely, on a true story. So there really is no other way for it to end. How did you want it to end? The Nazis catch them and throw them into a concentration camp? That's pretty much the only other option.

After the Nazis occupied Austria, they were going to force Baron Von Trapp into serving in the First Reich or (I assume) face imprisonment or death.
Instead he and his family escaped over the Alps, settled in Vermont and opened a ski lodge. Okay, that's a HUGE generalization but that's the gist of it.
And it's a true story.

You do know that its based on a true story right? The Nazis invaded Austria and they fled. My mother met her(the real Lady Von Trapp) back in the 60's. it was a pretty long movie. I always kind of snoozed at the end.

You wish the ending was not so ethical and political?
The guy refused to serve the Nazis. Yes, it was ethical and political, but you wish it was not? You wish he joined the Nazis? Well, you have the right to have your silly opinions because we and the Russians kicked the Nazis of this Earth.
