has a non operative oven. What besides a dirty or misadjusted burner or bad thermostat could be wrong with it?

The unit is in my kitchen and is clean with the pilot lit. It simply failed to start as it has faithfully done until day before yesterday.

Possibly the thermocouple. The service call will cost more than the part.

Why is the oven "non-operative?" it sounds like you need to have your range overhauled. Yes, it could be a dirty thermostat or mis adjusted burner. I would clean the entire unit first before going any further. Then start looking for the simple things like a dirty burner, etc.

I have to agree with the above answer, probably have a pilot out....

Seriously though, those type of stoves are pretty old. You may want to have a service tech come out and give it the once over. This is one of those situations where you ask yourself, is my life really worth less than the $50.00 service call or the $400.00 to replace it?

Have you tried relighting the pilot lite in the oven? You could just have carbon build up on the pilot .
