Well, that depends on what you mean by authenticity, doesn't it?
People who define themselves in terms of their own perceived level of authenticity can get caught up in the "I'm realer than you" trap pretty quickly. And emos do that a lot, at least in my experience. So if they think you're "experimenting," they'll tend to see you as inauthentic. Which is their problem, but it will affect you, right?
I'm not minimizing how hard it is to fit in in a new environment - quite the reverse. That's the first reason why I think you should move slowly, and tread cautiously.
The second reason is that _you_ might get tired of _them_ if they start acting all holy around you.
Keep us posted, nevertheless.

Um...okay...so why don't you go be emo if that's what you want to be? The kids turning "Emo in order to fit in with new groups and make new friends" are changing who they really are to fit into a group and aren't being themself, and a lot of people see that as posing, but if that's what they want to do, so be it. If others say they're posing, then they can go write some depressing poetry about that. I have nothing against emos or any other stereotype because to me they're only a states of mind, not how you look, act or dress. If you truly do want to become emo, then go be emo. Just don't go around labeling yourself emo because that's just setting yourself up for insults from the "unwise". Okay? Good luck to you.

First of all, whether someone's emo or not, it doesn't mean they're a poser. There are tons of terms coined to describe the way a person or class of personality is. Of course, "emo" is actually just short for emotional.
Just because emo is short for emotional, it does not limit all emotional people (that would be everyone) to being emo. Emo is pretty much a name made up for a class of - I guess you could call it 'hyper emotional' - people, who tend to vent their emotions or rid themselves of depression in a more visual/visible/physical way.
These people might cut themselves, burn themselves, or just physically abuse themselves to create a physical pain en lieu of an emotional pain. Emo doesn't really apply to dressing in black (that would be gothic, which actually has more potential than emo, probably). I know tons of emo people who dress like preps.
Anyway, to answer your question directly, with the assistance of my provided 'emo' analysis, an emo poser would just be someone trying to be emo, although they are really not. And to piggy back off of another answer i think I saw, a poser is someone who pretends to be a certain way to blend in with another group of people. You can't be emo and a poser at the same time. (Unless you pretend to abuse yourself although you really don't). You're totally right Full Metal!

Emo is short for emotional and everyone is emotional.
I'm what ppl say "A GOTH" but really I'm just me, I listen to a variety of music i just choose to dress differently so I dont feel that I'm conforming to societies standards.
Posers, try-hards bah they are just words that ppl through out to make themselves feel better because they obviously thought they had that particular style first.
I just get so irritated when people say that I cut myself and that I'm depressed all because of my attire or the way that I think. It's totally ridiculous.
If you want to go into this genre of being emo then great, its only a style anyway plus its a style which lets you be creative.
(expressing an emotion if you will, happiness?)
don't listen to the ignorant fools that tell you being emo is lame because you get all depressed and ****. they obviously don't read books to understand the meaning of the word.

Hell no, I disagree. I've grown up watching the Nightmare Before Christmas. I don't think Nightmare Before Christmas has anything to do with emo crap. Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the best Stop Motion films of all time. Time Burton owns!

I think that you should stick w/ wat u got, and here's something about emos, punks, and goths.
The only one of those three that has a potential of being real is goth, because that wasn't invented by teens.
Punks and emos are ALL posers. They are just loser teens who try to make a statment of "I'm to stupid to care, so i'm going with this for" blah blah blah. I don't get why they are like that, i mean they have no reason...
Those 2 genres of teens usually get over it by 21. It's a so-called way to get out of their family depression.
