As the others have said, koi and goldfish (closely related) are classified as coldwater fish. However, they are really more temperate meaning they can tolerate a wide range of temps. The fish they descended from (wild carp) are naturally coldwater, but the ones that have been bred are much more tolerant of environmental conditions. Think outdoor ponds. Those can get really warm in the summer and the koi and goldfish are fine, as long as they have enough oxygen and shade to escape direct sunlight.

hope that helps!
