In general, students today are not used to writing by hand, so they write slowly and awkwardly, which may detract from your ability to listen to what is going on in class. I took all my notes in law school on a laptop, and it worked out well. On the other hand, not every professor will allow you to use a laptop in class (some of my colleagues, and even some of the students, have gotten fed up with students surfing the web or texting in class, and have banned laptops from the classroom.

For me, I took notes with the good ol notebook and pen through both my bachelors. It worked out great for me. I saw the others with laptops, but usually they were playing games on them in class, so they can be distracting if you get bored easily in class. I paid attention in class better with just taking notes the old fashioned way...but the hand cramps weren't very fun...

In my opinion it would just be easier to bring a pen and paper to class and take notes that way....It's much easier to carry when you're trying to rush out the door and you don't have to worry about having charged up and ready to go. Whether or not you should carry a laptop to class or do it the old fashioned way also depends on the teacher, your class surroundings and you in general.

take notes with whatever you feel comfortable with -- whatever you're quicker and more organized with ---
i personally have never in my four years of college and year of grad school -- never been able to use a laptop -- always a pen and notebook.
but to each his/her own. do whatever works -- that's the general rule for *everything* in college.
