I remember when science was boring...I told my teacher. He said all you have to do is focus on what the teacher is saying and if you understand it and know what everything means it wont be soooooooo boring. To find the difference...just look in the dictionary and then...find the difference.Science can get a little instresting and fun sometimes!!!

Boring Science

While it may seem that some of the words used in various branches of science were created by a lunatic whose only purpose was to annoy students, this isn't the case at all. Many of the words are quite descriptive and precise if you understand the Latin and Greek roots used to create them. Sometimes you'll get words that, when translated from the Greek or Latin, really don't tell you all that much about what it's describing, most scientists who create the words at least attempt to come up with something logical.

My advice would be to pick up the books "Learn Latin" and "Learn Ancient Greek" by Peter Jones. Both books teach a very good overview of each language and all the lessons are extremely short and easy to understand so it won't be much of a burden. Once you get through even half of the Latin book (which is only 170 pages) you'll be able to understand and remember scientific words much more easily. You'll probably even understand the difference in meiosis and mitosis without having to read an entire chapter of your science book to figure it out as the words themselves describe what the difference is.

Trust me, once you understand how the words are put together your enjoyment of science and your understanding of it will increase dramatically.

Most words in Biology and Medicine (well, I believe in most Sciences, really) come from Greek and Latin. These were very logical languages. By looking at the structure and the root of these "complicated" words, as you put it, you can already guess in which process they are involved. Therefore, if you understand the Biological processes you don't need to remember much, it would come natural...
For some of us (Myself, for example), Science is a passion, rather than a mere profession. What could be more exciting than finding out about the natural precesses around us? Just look around you!
Moreover, we scientists like to believe that what we do is useful to humanity. I, too, work on cancer research (like the lady above me), I have done since the end of my PhD 9 years ago. Would you tell me that preventing colon cancer is boring?

If you can't be bothered to learn and remember names or the "difference from meiosis and mitosis", probably you do not like Science. Fair enough! Do something else!

Well of course so that when the science community talks, others can't understand what they are saying. It's like a foreign language. I conduct clinical cancer research studies with my MS in neuroimmunology. When I talk, sometimes I have caught myself using words that others not in my field would say "what?!" Seriously... if you stay in it long enough, the words will become second nature to you...in the meantime though I agree, it is an uphill climb. You will get there. Took me 8 years to familiarize myself with enough to make me feel as though I can hold my own when conversing with PhDs. ;)

Are mitosis and meiosis are long words? Is it boring to find out the difference between the two?
Deoxyribonucleic acid and genetic engineering are simpler words. Study them first..

What else are they going to call that stuff? Those words have actual meanings that signify what they are. The problem is not the words, it is your ability to understand and cope with them.
