I prefer bag-less my self so I would pick Dyson. Don't be fooled by the different colors they come in. All DC17s for example are the same. The different names and color are codes for the attachments they come with. The "Animal" versions are usually the ones that are fully loaded. The Dyson yellow that popularized the brand are usually the base models.
Both brands are way over priced for what you get. The cheapest I've found are on eBay. Many of those are refurbished but many are not. You have to read the whole listing closely and ask the seller if in doubt.

Dyson by far wins. I spent 400 on mine. Your carpet looks brand new after one use. And everytime you vacuum after that it has less and less dirt in it. Which shows it works, unlike the Oreck you always have alot of dirt when you vacuum which means it isnt getting down to the padding before the carpet. Which leads to far worse problems. But both are going to be pricey, now you just have to chose which is best....DYSON!!!!!

dyson. anything that is bagless has constant airflow to pick up more whereas anything with a bag doesnt. so the dyson hands down....plus all dysons have a 5 year warranty! you can get a basic dyson for 399 at best buy or the dyson animal for 529!

I have had my own cleaning business for 15 years and in my experience with both ORECK XL is the winner by a long shot. You can go to Oreck.com and get them for 100.00 cheaper that from a retailer. Go with OreckXL

I have the Dyson Animal designed for getting dog hair out of carpet (I have three dogs). I have to say it does very well. It is pricey but worth it.

Oreck. They have been around for a long time and are likely to stay in business. Hotels use them, so they must be good.
You might find a used one at one of their stores.

DYSON is the best but you are gonna pay. Both brands are very expensive.

dyson is the best vacuum in the world, hands-down. You buy one of those babies, and you'll be amazed at how much gunk was down in your "clean" carpets.
