Your engine has to work harder to spin the compressor for the air conditioner, so it therefore uses more gas. But, if you drive with your windows down, there is a good chance that you will use even more gas because of the loss of aerodynamics

Gas is compressed, sent to a radiator that blows air through it.

Compressing a gas releases heat, cooling the gas to a liquid.

The cold liquid cycles through another radiator with air blowing though it, absorbing the heat in the car and making the air blowing through the radiator feel cool.

The liquid, after absorbing the heat from the cabin of your vehicle, turns to a gas. The process is then repeated over and over.

yes you are using gas to power your AC because the your engine runs with a series of belts if you use another accessory on your car you motor has to work that much harder to cover the power it needs to output to the AC motor.
