Hi, I've been having trouble choosing between the Dell Inspiron E1505 and the HP dv6000t. They seem like very capable systems. Both are coming with Windows Vista Home Premium, same size screen, and apps. The specs of each are as follows:

The Dell: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB), 15.4 in. screen, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ 2 DIMM, 120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive, 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 TurboCache, 9-cell lithium, and Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N for about $1,684.

The HP: Same processor, same screen, basically same memory, same hardrive, but has a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG,and a 12-cell lithium for about $1672.

I was also wondering what the difference is between Shared Dual channel memory and normal RAM because for the Dell, there is a choice between 2GB of Shared dual channel at 533MHz or normal 2GB at 667MHz. Also, is hardrive speed significant because a choice of 100GB at 7200rpm is offered.

ANY help is appreciated

I would have to go with the HP. Testing has shown that even though they're very similar on the inside, the outside matters too. DELL has been know to fall apart physically more often at HP. At least the notebooks. I was told by quite a few techies that Toshiba is actually better than both HP and DELL. Ask a few different computer vendors on their opinion. (Let them know you're not there to buy one.) Also ask computer repair shops on what gets brought in most for fix ups. This is how I found our which vehicles to avoid. If they're always in the shop, somethings not right. Best wishes.

As a public service, I feel obligated to disclose that, barely three hours after unpacking my brand-spanking-new Dell Inspiron E1505, it's now securely packed-up back in the box ready to be returned. Why? Because it can't do the most fundamental, basic thing expected of it: connect to the Internet via the new Wireless-N protocol. I've got an identical Dell on Windows XP, plus my regular Desktop PC on Windows XP, both humming along nicely on the newly-installed Linksys "N" router network (which, of course, is how I'm writing this now). But the new Dell with Windows Vista just won't connect. I've just spent THREE HOURS bouncing around from India to heaven-only-knows where: tech support, customer service, hardward support and finally wireless "specialty" support. At the end of the road, Dell's crack support team hadn't a clue why my computer could find the signal and "connect" to the wireless network, but wouldn't browse. This, after making me completely reconfigure my Linksys router and both other computers in the network. I won't even begin to detail all the attempts at solutions and work-arounds. But, bottom line, if I'm having this much trouble right out of the gate, FUHGEDABOUDIT. This ain't some obscure task. It's the "new" wireless protocol, with the "new" Windows OS. The clear expectation is: you open the box, turn the thing on, and browse away! Well, 180 cel-time minutes later, nothing doing. Oh -- and those commercials with the "agent" are TOTALLY RIGHT ON: every daggone time you try to launch a new application, you've got to confirm that, yes, you did actually mean to press the button you just pressed.. that, yes, you do actually want to do what you just told the computer you do want to do. Oh, MY GOD. How ridiculous. I'd want to hurl the damn thing against a wall if I used it much longer. So, word to the wise: make your next stop the Mac Store. I'll see you there!

I would choose the Dell Inspiron e1505 because it is fully customizable. The HP notebook looks a little too plain and what you see is what you get. With Dell, you can get custom covers for the back of the LCD screen. I would choose the Dell.

They are both good computers and it is a hard decision. But with all the stuff I've gone through with computers, I would suggest the Dell. It's a lot more reliable and has many updates and can help with any problems you may incounter in the furture. Since and HP is a more older computer, you may end up with more problems with then the Dell. Hope it helps you decide!
