The standard question to determine optimist or pessimist is.. Do you see the glass half full or half empty..I always asked what they were doing with it before they asked. If they were drinking from it then it is half empty but if they were filling if up then it is half full. I think most people are a little of both. One cannot be a pessimist all the time. There have to be those moments when the sun shines upon them allowing them a happy thought.

I am most definitely an optimist with a small sprinkling of pessimism. I try to see the good in everything and everyone. I am thankful for all the wonderful things in my life(my daughters & hubby) and I try to concentrate on the good and not worry so much about what is lacking. Yeah sure every now and then I get down and see things negatively, but for the most part I tend to keep my chin up! =)

I will agree with your assessment of the world if you will add a third class, realist.

I acknowledge acting the pessimist has helped me survive. But, I also acknowledge acting the optimist has enriched my quality time. Still, I am rooted in the present, just as a good realist should be.
