That's part of the problem when breeding fish, getting rid of unwanted babies. Guppies are one of the worst in this regard. I would take the trade for fish food, at least you are getting something out of the deal. While your at the shop talk to the owner about what he would like to be able to buy from a local breeder. Then you at least have a list of fish you know you can sell if you can breed them.

I have guppies, and I have noticed that when the water temperature is around 65, they don't breed as much. You might want to try keeping the water temperature below 70, but above 60 if you can. You might still get a batch of babies now and then, but guppy libidos definitely slow down in cooler water.

Don't let it get too cold! Guppies are tropical fish and they will all perish on you if let the water get too cold.

Also, get a fancy male so that the babies you get are more fancy. A local fish store might take your surplus, as long as they are healthy and colorful.

Good luck!

Buy a new tank, set it up and stock it with a few mature oscars.
When they are hungry scoop out a net full of guppies and put them in with the oscars.
Problem solved.
That way you deal with a pest of the fish world and feed som very beautiful exotic tropical fish.
By the way, i doubt any fish shop will take them as they are all too common because of their breeding habbits.

Some local pet stores will buy them or give in store credit. Usually they want them to be large enough to sell. They may also just take the fry from you if they are very small but that might cause your babies to become feeder guppies. Check with your local pet store.

sometimes pet stores will buy them but it depends on your local stores. If you want the babies to live make sure you get them into a seperate tank as soon as possible or the moms and dads will eat them.

A fish store will usually take them off of your hands.
