I'm having a problem with my fish over and over. i have had a lot of fish in the past. but they all seem to die (yes i know they aren't immortal) and it always seems to happen the same way. they start to float more than swim, and wobble. they can't keep themselves upright. and then evenutally they sink to the bottom on their side. i use to work in a fish store, a long time ago, and i have never been able to answer this. maybe someone out there knows, or has some kind of idea. thank you.

sounds like swim bladder disorder. there are many causes, some fatal, some not. usual cause is constipation, but others are bacterial infection, parasites, rupture, ect... I'll see if I can find a few good reference sites for you.

Over feeding causes 99.9% of problems in the aquarium. Change the water to 50% when a fish dies. If all your fish die change 50% of the water and then, let the tank run for some days. Beneficial bacteria might cause his problem. If the fish were big fish like big Barbs, feed less.Make sure you don't overcrowd your aquarium, this causes some problems. If you do have a tank with too many fish get a bubble wand, or air stone. This will give some oxygen, but so much. Check your water and test it from time to time. Make sure anything you have in your aquarium m is for aquarium use or harmless to the fish. DON"T GO OT THE SEA AND GET SOME ROCKS AND ADD IT TO THE AQUARIUM. This can high end the pH and cause 80% of the disease known. Make sure that what ever you feed your fish is good. Unless you have a piranha:)

you temp should be between 70-80 F you should have some sort of aeration (bubble curtain) never put fish in the same water that one died in, the water will still have what ever killed the fish (if it was some sort of parasite). make sure your changing about 15-20% of your water a week to keep ammonia levels down. don't over feed excess food will pollute the water making it bad for the fish. Have a timed lighting system and have some where for your fish to hide so they won't feel stressed all the time.

The unknown problem:
How big is your tank?
How big is the fish load?
Do you isolate a newcomer for at least 2 weeks in a separate tank?
Do you make regular weekly water changes of 25%?
Is your tank sterile/cleaned properly with bleach before you set it up for new fish? If not, did you have diseased and dying fish in there before?
Did you identify the diseases or bacteria that killed your fish?

These are the kind of questions I would ask you.
Having worked in a fish store, isn't there anyone of your former co-workers who could help you along?

It would be helpful if you could inform us of how you set up a tank or how you transport your new arrivals. Somewhere along the way there are mistakes made, and you need to work on finding them.

If you have aquarium books, please read up about the proper set up and maintenance of a tank, about using medications for various illnesses...

I wish you the best.

I had the same thing happen to me over and over, until I realized it was the water. You MUST do water changes frequently, even in freshwater tanks...at least monthly. My goldfish would retract all of his fins and just lay on the bottom, while my other fish would do just fine. I thought it was internal, but it wasn't. After I put him in a hospital tank and changed like 75% of the water in his home tank, he sprang right up!
