1. you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody you can stand for the next 50 or 70 years.
2. you want to know what's the quickest way to get into her pant.

Women tend to hold discussions on a personal level and men usually do not. You are right - sometimes a man is not thinking at all or thinking something socially unacceptable, so he does not want to answer, but when a woman asks you what you are thinking, she wants to know more about what you want to do, be, etc. It is a sign of interest in continuing a relationship with you. When you decline the invitation to discuss your personal thoughts and feelings, you are closing her off and she usually will consider who else she knows who is more in touch with his feelings.
