Another advantage to canister filters is that they usually offer a much greater flexibility in filter media. Much easier to add some peat moss to the filter, or crushed coral or other additives you may need for special applications. But that's a rare case for most people.

I have both types of filters. For my 55 and 125 gallon tanks I am using the large Eheim canister filters, as they can hold all kinds of filtering and beneficial bacteria enhancing materials. I clean them out every 6 - 8 weeks. All the hoses leading to and from these filters have the quick connect little faucets on them. When I remove the filters, I am able to disconnect the hoses and head for the kitchen sink.

The hang on the back or side filters Magnums are easier to maintain (on one of them I have a Bio-wheel attached), but often these filters are noisy and the Bio-wheel situation lets the water evaporate rather quickly. It seems that I am losing 1" of water in 36 hours.

The filters are paid for, I will keep them, and deal with problems as the arise.

The first poster is correct with his info - a canister can be harder to clean, so that's your disadvantage.

The advantage of canisters is that the water can't bypass the filter media like in can with a hang-on, where the water can flow over the filter media if it gets clogged, or over or around the uptake tube.

Another item to consider is the price - canisters tend to be a lot more expensive than hang-on types.

i don't like canister filter because it take more time for maintenance. I suggest you should buy those hang on filter by aquaclear or emperor easier to clean and it has good steady water flow.
