A new computer will very in price a lot depending on your needs! If you just want to be able to get on the internet and have no plans on gaming or downloading software or music you can come out pretty cheep! With a new package from Compac running about $489.97. Although I would recommend that you do some research on these three things before you make you purchase! 1-processors 2-memory 3- harddrive's. Hope that this info helps and happy computer hunting!

First, decide what you want to do, then determine how large a hard drive you will need, amount of memory, etc.
As important as price is good support. If you do not buy from a reputable dealer you will be wasting your money.
I have hardware from three companies and I have found HP to have the best support so far. Dell is pretty good.
Re: Price - you can go to their websites and "build you own." You might also catch a refurbished.
I am only interested in serious work, and I paid $299. If you want to dabble in movies and games, you will probably have to pay more.

In order to answer this question we need to know what you will be using the computer for.
If you intend to just surf the net, burn some CD/DVD's and do emailing you don't require an expensive computer.
If you intend to do high speed 3D gaming and the above you require quite a substantial system.
The difference can be quite a few hundred dollars, as with the second system you require lots of RAM, a good video card, dual core processor and a lot larger hard drive.
A basic system can be bought for between $350.00 and $500.00, but a high end gaming computer can cost $1,500.00 to $2,500.00

I got an Emachines too, it cost me 333$ about. But between you and me it sucks. But it can run games like Half-life 2 and relatively decent on Quake 4, but I popped in a new GPU (Nvidia GeForce 7950GT) that helped a ton. Just about made my 3dmark score go from 241 to 1421. So all in all it was around $550. I'm builind a new system though and it'll be a BEASTTTT!!!!
