In it's original meaning all cult meant was a group of adherants to a common set of beliefs. It was only when more powerful religions wished to somehow separate their delusional beliefs from the delusional beliefs of others that the idea of the current interpretation of cult actually occurred. Now cult is somehow a bad word, and we are all on the lookout for "cults",but all religions are cults. It's just that the most powerful and influential are somehow given the right to decide what is normal religious adherance.

A cult by definition is just an organized group of people with a focused interest, so many things are accepted cults really. Not just organized religion. 'Cult' It's just a word.

I think that they are. If the basis of a belief or religion is based on faith. then of course there is no proof. there is nothing wrong with believing in a God--i believe in a god. what is wrong is using that belief in any way to modify the real world such as in politics or national policy of any kind. Faith is a personal issue and should be kept close. Those that use their faith as a weapon are wrong on many levels. Since we live in reality, not a dream world or video game, it would be wise to use logic and science as our tools and live decent lives as were are obligated to by our faith. However if a group or "cult" insist that their faith requires the manipulation of the reality we all live in, they need to be marginalized in some way...in other words "if your faith requires that it imposes on my physical welfare, it is an invasion of my rights as a living person and should be outlawed from practicing"

According to the dictionary, a cult is :
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
So I guess that would be a yes.

I believe they are cults. Not all organized religions or denominations are cults however. But I find most evangelical fundamentalist religions are definitely cults because they brainwash their kids and their church members. They prey on people's weaknesses and their feelings of inadequacy and desires to belong to something. And, they prey on their feelings of uncertainty and anxieties just like all cults have in the past and still do.
antonett…Go rent "Jesus Camp". You need to see what Evangelicals are up too in this country. They do act like a cult just like you're pointing out. They don't believe in free will or choice.

It is merely a safe, warm, blanket that people use to hide under when things go awry.
Unfortunately, organized religion does more to divide than unite people. It is just as unnecessary to classify and quantify ourselves as Christian, Jewish, or Muslim than it is to maintain a racial identity. So..."accepted cult". Sounds about right.

I thought they were......Especially since people moved to this new America to get away from the Catholic rule that persecuted anything that got in it's way. Under God had a new and truthful meaning, then, we could unite under God and have no witch burnings, or no heresy hangings.
Lawyers have torn the Constitution to shreds, though, so now I can't even go to school with my son during prayer day, I have to drop him off at the same spot and then find a parking spot and then go to the back of the school yard and pray with him around a makeshift flagpole. It is so ridiculous, I have heard of worse horror stories about praying, but since Christianity is now the cult, I should hold back about why Christ died on a Roman Cross, even though the Jewish officials committed Him to die. It was this day, actually, so what better day to tell you about it.
Christ was not hung by the nails to the cross, He was hung by His love for us. He knew His destiny as the Lamb of God, but He didn't resist it one bit. There were people there laughing at Him, and mocking Him, but He didn't say one word to them. The words He spoke were to the fellow exicutionist, the one that acknowleged that He was the Christ.
Amazing, the Jews let go a criminal to execute Jesus, and a criminal to die alongside with Christ was the one to acknowlege Him.
Organized religion is like Catholicism, disliking people because they go to church, fanatical, Get rid of your delusions, our rights are being taken away by your hateful attitude.

Screw You. If organized religion was a cult, then it wouldn't promote "free will" and there wouldn't be people "loosing there faith" where as in cults you do not have a free will and you are brainwashed.

Charles Manson had a cult too. It doesn't have to be religious.

Yes. And they are thinly disguuised as being good. When they are evil. Just look at how many intolerant people follow them. And try and force feed it down everyones throat.
