I live in Northern MN and have a beautiful tree covered driveway. I was wondering what else I could plant down the sides of my driveway. Something that would come back every year. Something colorful. Thanks

Sounds like you would have alot of shade later in the summer. There is a plant called pulmonaria or lungwort which is one of the earlist blooming perennials. The flowers look like little bells from shades of pink to deep purple. The foliage they have is worth the planting. This plant, if happy, forms neat little bushes with white spotted leaves. Daffodils are great but you have to deal with the fact that you cannot cut down the leaves or the daffodils will not survive. After bloom, these leaves can be an eyesore is something is not planted close to hide the leaves. Pulmonaria can be alternated with daffodils and the leaves from the pulmonaria would hide the daffodil leaves. You can also plant crocus. Then, considering that you must have shade, I would consider decorative hostas. There are some beautiful hostas but there are also some ugly looking things. If you have any sun at all, miniature roses are just gorgeous. There is also creeping phlox that will bloom in any color you choose. After the phlox flowers, the foliage is very pretty. Could give you a lot more recommendations if I knew if you have any sun on the ground after Spring.

Astilbe, Hellebores, Bleeding Hearts, daylilies, delphinium, cuphea, lily-of-the-valley, echinacea (daisy), geraniums, gerber daisy, Asian lilies, peonies, poppies, salvia, scabiosa, sedum, calla lily, violas, columbine and iris are good choices.

I am assuming you are in Zone 3 and have a shaded/partly shaded driveway. I would do a mixture of these so that you have flowers blooming throughout the growing season. Cut back as they start dying back and let the fresher flowers shine through.

You could try irises, tulips, or daffodils. There are a lot of gorgeous varieties of all of these flowers, and you don't even want to plant them too deeply. Just remember to divide them once in a while.
