Depends on if you support the scientifical theory or the religious theory.

As has already been mentioned, it depends whether you support the Creationist argument (ie. the Universe was created out of nothing, ex nihilo) or the Darwinist argument.

In Creationism, an intelligent mind or entity created the first chicken as it was, and so it had no ancestors and therefore did not hatch from an egg. This means the chicken came first.

In Darwinism, species develop gradually over generations by passing on traits that helped them survive. Thus, the first "chicken", as we know them, would have hatched from the egg of its parents (not quite chickens, but their most immediate ancestors) inside which it would still have been a chicken. This means the egg came first.

Neither, a single celled organism would have evolved into a chicken which would lay an egg and that egg would be fertilized and then there would be a chick.

And I don't think this question fits in with history, more like philosophy or biology.

The egg. The egg would have been created from ovum and sperm from a different species of bird that was the precursor to the chicken.

I guess this little riddle has been passed down for ages and ages, thus it almost constitutes a 'historical' question...
