Spanish was the first European language in America. There is no superiority in the language in and of itself, but there is obvious superiority in Bilingualism. There is no country in the world besides the US and UK that speaks only one language. There is no country in the world that doesn't have neighbors that speak a different language. Bilingualism/multilingualism is essential to the economic survival of any nation.

Monolingualism in the US is based on fear- the fear of the encroachment on Anglo-Protestant society by all those you refuse to communicate with. This is ironic, seeing as how Anglo-Protestants now make up a very small percentage of the ancestry of Americans.

Bilingualism can be defended legally- New Mexico has a clause in it's constitution that states it can cecede from the Union if both Spanish and English are not permitted to remain as co-official languages of the state. Puerto Rico- a territory of the US- is under forced occupation by the US, and changing the official language would just be further encroachment on the national sovereignty of a people. Hawaiians also have their own language, as do Alaskan natives and natives of all the American tribes. Guam has it's own language, and so does American Samoa. It is not the people of these nations that chose English- though they may cherish their citizenship- as an official language, rather a country with a predominantly English speaking population invaded these countries and members of it's government now argue against their cultural sovereignty, let alone that of recent immigrants to this nation.

Yes, it is important to learn English. But promoting monolingualism and monolinguistic education would only further deteriorate the fabric of this nation, not the other way around and Newt Gingrich would have you believe. By the way, why doesn't he translate his Swiss last name or change it back to McPherson so he doesn't sound so ghetto?

I don't speak fluent anything except English and I speak that very well. I have a street knowledge of Spanish, Italian, Portugese..which means I can get around in those countries pretty well.

Do you know that the United States is just about the ONLY country in the world that doesn't require school students to take and learn at least one other language. Some countries require two. I think a second language should be required for all students. One of the major languages like French or Spanish or Italian.

We Americans are a bunch of dummies when it comes to communicating outside our own boundaries.

wow... you are assuming that Spanish is the first language...
Maybe they speak fluent spanish and it is a second or third language. Only in America do we think learning more than one language is a bad thing.
Go travel the world - learn that English isn't the only language in the world.

I had six years of it and can read it just fine. I have no problem with bilingual individuals...it's just that a society shouldn't be bilingual.
