My kitchen sink faucet leaks when it is turned on. The water drips out of the two handles (compression sink).

Most fixes pertain to a faucet that leaks with a drip. Drip drip drip.. but mine only leaks when the water is actually turned on. This is a problem because I am hooking up portable dishwasher and washing machines to the sink, so a lot of hot water is being wasted.

Your problem is probably the stem seals. Turn off the water to both sides of the sink and unscrew the nut, located under the faucet handle. When the nut is loose, you should be able to turn the faucet stem out of the frame, it's threaded, so turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. On the bottom of the stem is a rubber or nylon washer held on with a screw. That's the seal. Take them off and go to the hardware store. They come in different sizes, so, you might want to take the stem with you. Replace them, reassemble the faucet and your good to go. There might also be a seal under the nut, this will probably be an "O" ring, you can get them also at the hardware.

Most faucets use washers to stop the water flow. A few pinch off a plastic tube. Those are supposed to last 'forever', so I'll assume yours is a washer system. Turn off the water below the sink at the little turncock near the floor. Open the faucet to make sure it is indeed off. Pop the plastic or metal screw cover off of the handle. Remove the screw you just exposed, and pull the handle up and off. Now use a wrench to loosen the hex nut the you should have exposed. Lift the assembly off and inspect the washer. At this point you should probably take the whole assembly to the hardware store so you can compare it with what they have. Then just replace the bad parts and reinstall just like you took it apart. Turn the water back on and you are done!

There is a packing gland around the stems and there should be a nut you can tighten to compress the packing. This would stop the leak coming out of the handles.

Depending on what your faucet actually looks like, the handles have washers or seals in them too. You have to remove the handles and pop the valve off and replace them or you might just have to replace the whole faucet entirely, depending on what you have. Remember to turn your water valve, below off or you main off before attempting to fix your faucet first.

The gaskets are worn out in the faucets. If you open up the faucet all the way you may find it stops leaking.
