I have worked for a corporation as a technician for about 9 months. Recently, the corporation(charter communications) did a career fair for inhouse sales. I trained for 2 1/2 months for my technician position. I managed to score good in my year end review. We are judged mainly on repeat calls; a call that you go to and to customer scheduled another appointment within 1 week. The company standard is 10% repeat call. I was around 5%. I also never have done any cable technical job before. In the first quarter of this year, I produced the second most jobs completed, and the third lowest repeat calls from around 40 technicians. I arrived at the career fair, and was immediately turned down for not having any sales experience. I managed to get the lady to rethink and she called in for her supervisor. The supervisor told me to come in another time, and talked her into allowing me to interview.I did really good in the interview and could tell I was liked. I am highly motivated.no job

If you really want to get into sales, you need to learn the trade. It is obvious that although you are highly motivated, they prefer not having to train anybody or train somebody in sales (you either have it or you don't).

You went after the sales job too soon. When people hire a salesperson, they look for one of two things - either a great deal of sales experience OR and great deal of knowledge of the product and the company. After 9 months, the manager probably felt that you didn't know enough about the products or the company to compensate for the lack of sales experience. My suggestion is to stay in the technical position for another year and then go apply for the sales job again. When you go, remind them that you have been resolving customer issues for 2 years and have gained valuable insights into their needs and expectations which will make you an excellent salesperson.

they said you had no sales experience...so get a weekend job at the nearest Wagreeens, or at a clothing store.

Sometimes jobs are already promised to someone, maybe someone with a lot more years on the job, but by law the job has to be advertised and people interviewed for the job anyway. But maybe you were trained because you are inline for a job anyway. So get the experience they said you needed.

Sometimes people don't get hired within the company they work for, but since you don't have a long time on the job if I were you I'd wait till I had 2-3 years on the job and then if nothing happened then I'd apply at another company for a better (more income) job.

Instead of asking anyone on this site who's never met you, the best person to ask would be that supervisor you got to give you the interview. If you approached her with questions surrounding her impressions of the interview, you'd have valuable info to look at. Seek constructive criticism to learn where you can improve, and solicit positive comments so you know where your strengths lie. Good luck, and keep that motivation on high!

Unfortunately, the labor market is really tight right now. The employer may have found someone with more experience. Keep on trying... someone will want a highly motivated employee like you!
