Gen 5:32 does say that after Noah was 500 years old he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Gen 7:6 does give Noah's age as 600 when the flood came.
Nowhere does the Bible tie the commissioning of the ark to the birth of his sons. We know that Shem was 100 yrs old, two year after the flood.(Gen 11:10). But this still does not give any clue as to when Noah could have been called to build the ark. The best reckoning would be to examine Genesis 6:3.
This is best interpreted to indicate God had decided to destroy the flesh of the earth in 120 years. From that reference, proceed to Genesis 6:12-14.
I therefore strongly favor the 120 years argument.

The flood waters were on Earth for fourty days and fourty nights.
The Bible says that Noah was about 500 years old when God told him to construct an arc of unheard of proportions, and he was said to have finished it 100 years later.
And his age can be explained both mythological and logicly, religious people would say that in the beginning God would have intended for humans to live long lives whereas logical people would say that the region Noah lived in could have been able to keep disease and other atrocities out through careful trade but I think that this is impossible becouse I think that our ancestors wouldn't of been smart enough to do this and on top of that there are no records of border security in that time period.
So in summary it took him about 100 years and the flood lasted 40 days.

It is implied that prior to the flood, God made His decision to destroy sinful mankind. At that time, Noah was asked to build the Ark. At around 500 years old became the father of "Shem, Ham and Japeth" (Gen 5:32) and at 600 years of age finally entered the Ark (Gen 7:6). Therefore, taking the difference in Noah's age from the "commission" to the flood was potentially up to one hundred years to build the Ark since we don't know exactly when Noah began.

It may not have taken full 100-120 years to build the ark. Noah may have spent most of that time gathering materials, money, and planning the ark. It was an immense project and an incredible engineering feat...so it could have taken a while for him to plan it out. So it is still questionable actually how much time was spent on building it.

I think Folklore & Mythology would be a better category for this question. If not, then Religion & Spirituality.
There never was a person named 'Noah' who built an "arc."
Thanks for the thumbs down, and have a nice arc.
