Hey Yahoo, many think its my wire from the alternator to the starter wire that may be bad. I havent got the chance to change it but im gonna when its warm tommorow. my questions is where is a place I may be able to buy one just like it with fusible links in it? or can I upgrade it to a different wire without worrying about it causing a fire if anything went wrong? I've read 10 gauge would be fine with no fuses put inline, does that sound fine? any input is appreciated.

yes u an buy the wire at auto parts store such as autozone etc.. if you go through the dealer you will defintley gonna pay for it.. if you want to run a different wire thats no problem either and can actually save you some $$ 10 gauge will be suffecient and pretty much up to you . I personally owned a 3/4 ton suburban and done the exact same to mine. i had problems with starters also 454 v8 and the heat was melting the starter switches.so many $$$$ in heat shields and finally jumped across the starter switch on starter and run wire up to the fender firewall and mounted a ford switch kept it out the heat and that fixed it. i run 10 gauge wire and i did put a inline fuse block in mine fuse block is unexpensive . and is a safe manner. good luck.. hope it helps..

I had a 1985 Chevy K-10 and had a similar problem.
You may want to check the charging wire from the alternator to the starters hot wire, or where it goes through the shield tube near the exhaust manifold.

Other thing to check (under the dash) is the fuse. It's seems simple, but it's worth a check.

ADDED: Oh, duh....I should have read it more carefully.

particular, you could replace that "exciter" twine with even if you pick of a matching diameter. considering the fact which you're constructive that one and all connections are tight and sparkling, this is a bite of information: "new" alternators are something yet new. you need to purchase it at a community areas keep for $40 or at a dealership for $3 hundred - all of them are rebuilt. What which skill is: broking mechanics particularly situations replace 2-3 alternators till now they run right into a stable one. that's formally called DOA - lifeless On Arrival. You ok may well be handling this fact...

do what the other answer says, Ive done it before on a derby car, take at least 10 gauge wiring and run it from the post on the back of the altnator to postive battry post. all it does is eliminate running the juice thru the solenoid.

Why go throught all that. Just run a wire from the back of the alt the one that says battery to the + side terminal of the battery.
It will charge the battery.

If there are no auto parts stores, then you call up the checy dealership and order one. If you are not sure, do to the body shop and get this done!
