why worry about the sliver in your neighbors eye, when you can't remove the plank from your own? (sorry i butchered the quote.)
Americans can't even stop fighting amongst themselves. how can We help anyone? silly to think we can. corruption (on BOTH sides-don't lie to yourselves about it.) and infighting among country men(women-whatever)...these things are making the BEST country on earth look silly.
but hey, at least Mr. Bush makes a tough decision to stand for what is right-even when it's not popular. Britain just showed the world, sharia law, coming to a theater of conflict near you.
you "freedom from religion" nuts'll like that.

I agree. So the question becomes:
What great power does America have?
And what is the corresponding responsibility?
Can this goal be achieved?
Government has a role to play. But what is that role?
My understanding, and what I tend to believe, is that government should play a restricted role. Only existing as a conduit for means of justice. Based on an innocent until proven guilty foundation. Not consisting of vast broad powers. For example, much of what this government has pursued this past century. Social programs, foreign interventionism, basically a welfare/warfare state. More of the same. The world has been there and done that.
Yes. With great power comes great resonsibility. And half of that great responsibility is not abusing that great power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The afflictions you mention... These ailments that exist in man's mind and are expressed throughout society.. I suppose that if one is going to promote liberty, one must also be ready to carry out the justice.
I suppose this is one major problem we have.
On the one hand we are told we should not take the law into our own hands. [Unless you are Clint Eastwood :)]
On the other hand we see that we often don't have an immediate choice when dealing with the state.
So, there are compromises made.
How any compromises are people willing to take?
If one wants to help in Darfur. Do so.
If one wants to help the homeless in America. Do so.
Etc, etc.
It's all about organization. And responsibility.
Not necessarily the government.

It is sort of a damned if you do damned if you don´t situation.
What your saying is that we should help to save lives and address the real problems as you put it more or less at the source of the problems if I understand you correctly. But generally those real problems are the corruption and greed not to mention ineptitude of the countries leaders.
Take Egypt for an example. For decades they have been recieveing aid at tremendous levels. "Aid" is the word we use but the reality is welfare or plane out and out bribe to a nation. We have been "aiding" them in exchange that they keep it cool with Israel.
All the while, in the dollars they have recieved they should have been able to build the most modern road and highway system in the world, built thousands of schools, created all sorts of social works programs to give jobs...and yet...well, visit and you will see.
All the while the Egyptian government in thier interntal state sponsored press berates the west and particularly thier benefactor the US.
Now what has been the result of this? They have some of the highest rate of terrorists of all, including on 9-11.
So how do we stop that at the root?
Do we take over and administer the country?
That is going so well in Iraq I am sure everyone wants to duplicate that.
So we are damned if we don´t do something like in Africa where the worlds leaders say that without the US involvement no one will take it seriously and therefore by omision we are to blame for the genoside in Rwanda.
Or we are damned if we do when we finally try to establish a democratic foundation nation in the Middle East in Iraq.
What we need to do is to start slowly but surely to isolate ourselves more and more. Pull back from the worlds troubles and concentrate on our own. Send the UN to Brussles or France and just withdraw from the lead roll. Start to really do our "Favored Nations Status" on trade with a select few and start to see how the world starts to sing a differant tune.
The US needs to get out of the "running the world" business and get to running our own business correctly.
Best Regards.

So, let me get this straight... It's the US's resposability that everyone is loved, has plenty of cash and power of others. Well I'm sorry to inform you of this but thats a load of guano. Self determination is what gets you through this life, that and a bit of luck. People need to take responsablility for their own niche in life. Life is tough.

How can we do that when we can overlook problems like the genocide in Darfur? We have to overcome bureaucracy and greed before we can tackle the underlying issues.

I think they are caused by woundedness and
personal sin. We have thrown God out of our schools,
our government, heck He's barley welcome in some churches! We need to go back to the golden rule....
do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
