I think there synonymous with each other. It's actually spelled Hootenanny.

I have heard of them both (I live in the South, afterall), but I'm not entirely sure of the difference. However, just from my limited experience, I think a hoedown usually involves music and I'm not so sure a hoot-a-ninny does.

i thought it was a hoot-a-nanny...... otherwise i think these things are all the same....... except i think a hoot-a-ninny/nanny is more advertized and a hoedown is kept more private

I think it's hootnanny. which is a gathering of folk singers. A hoe Down is a dance gathering.
