This particular state happened to me often, but not as often over the recent weeks. Sometimes I cannot recall it until a while after I am fully awake. Usually I realize it the moment I become fully awake. The state is this: after sleep, I feel awake. I may even open my eyes. I have many thoughts. Sometimes the thoughts are about a dream I just had. Sometimes it seems like there was no dream before I came into this state.

I am aware of being in my room, and “feel” as thought I am more conscious than I am. The one distinguishing feature of this state is my lack of audio detection. I do not hear anything. I know this because my awareness continues from this state to when I am fully conscious. That is to say, I am thinking, and am aware of myself thinking, until at one moment I become fully aware of both my thinking and my surroundings, and all my senses kick in.

The transition has been quite drastic some mornings, as the second I become “normally” aware, I hear the birds (or w/e).

Some of you recognize what this is. in this state i am still in bed, and usually have not opened my eyes. sometimes i am aware that once i open my eyes i will fall out of it. sure enough when i do open my eyes i begin to hear.

In my view what you are going through is not strange at all, just most people may not even notice they go through the same. When I am awaking it is not strange to be still in a dream and trying to reorganise my dream to what suit me better. The fact that I am trying to think of how I can have a different outcome of the dream itself indicates that I am for that part awake yet, otherwise I am not aware so much of my surroundings and then suddenly I am clear minded about my environment and have full knowledge of all parts of the dream. It is simply where you mind is kicking over from a dream to reality and you try to reason your dream into what your consicous mind is deeming to be better.
The benefit for me is that when I go to bed with a complexed issue then often in the morning upon awaking I realise it was in my dream and I resolved it and upon fully awaking I have the solution. My dreams are not about weird matters, but generally about matters around me and so are in that sense constructive.
Not uncommon that when my wife says something to me I am right awake even so up to that I was in a state of re-organising, so to say, the outcome of my dream and not aware I was awake for that part. As such, her voice merely alert me to the last stage of waking up.

WHILE I SERVED IN TTHE ARMED FORCES (NATO) I WOULD HAVE THE HABIT TO USE EVERY MINUTE WE WOULD STOP TO HAVE A NAP OF PERHAPS ONE MINUTE OR SO, AND AFTER WE SPEN THE ENTIRE NIGHT ON A MANOUVRE I FOUND TO BE AS FIT AS ANYTHING BECAUSE OF THE SHORT POWER NAPS WHERE AS MOST OTHERS COULD HARDLY KEEP STANDING.

As such, you can influence your body how to sleep in short periods, even so still basically being allert (as they never had to wake me up as the moment anyone moved away I would be fully awake).

If you are not sleep walking then in my view you should not worry about being partly awake.

This is very common syndrome, not a disorder. When you had a very uncomfortable sleep, with lot of dreams. You must be thinking a lot on different subject,before going to bed. Hence though you are awake and eyes are open, you feel partial sleep , partial awake, very drowzy and hang overs. As you said once you come out of this state, and fully awake, and see the out side world, it vanishes.

A normal person will also experience this type of unnatural feeling bit often. You are also experiencing it, once in a way. There is nothing to worry. Immediately after getting full awareness, after sleep, do not think about what happened in your sleep, do not recall dreams. Hang a nice photo of your choice, in such a way you see it first after wake up, or sing your favorite song (not loudly), best thing is keep a small radio or music system, near your bed, switch it on immediately after wake up, listen it for some time, and then get out of your bed. Keep your mind fresh before going to bed. Good luck.

You may be suffering from a form of sleep paralysis. It is when you are nearly awake but you cannot move. It ussually only lasts a few seconds to a few minutes at most. It's frightening but not really serious. You probably should consult your doctor to make sure there is nothing to be concerned about. For your own peace of mind.

Usually, just before we awaken, we are in a state similar to the dream state in which our minds are very active, but other parts of our body are asleep. I wonder, are you up and walking when this happens or still in bed?

Could be sleep apnea, could be you do not have the chemical in your body to put you to sleep and keep you asleep. Call a sleep clinic and go sleep.
