Will the Washington monument still be standing in 2000 years? Mt. Rushmore? The Statue of Liberty? Will explorers of the future assume the Washington Monument was a temple of worship that took ten thousand workers 8 years to build? The faces on Mt. Rushmore gods? The statue of Liberty a goddess?
Hmmmmm I wonder today how the future will interpet our time, just as we wonder about mysterious icons of the past.

Unless there's some sort of world-wide Dark Ages I doubt there'd be much that needed to be explained. Since the invention of the printing press, and now the internet and other digital storage, the archiving of information has become vastly easier than ever before.

However, assuming that all current information about our culture were somehow lost, I would assume that they would probably take an educated guess and may, possibly, interpret the structures just as you've described.

Read the book "Motel of the Mysteries" by David Macaulay. It deals pretty much with this.

People might dig up some kids star wars or he-man figures and think they are idols as well. There are so many object that modern archaeologist have no idea what the functions were.
Look at Otzi the Iceman. There is a number of questions as to what the items he used were actually for.

An above poster said there is too much printed today. A great number of things are being created in computer formats that very well could be unreadable in the future. Information stored on tape drives in the 70's is nearly unreadable because of the lack of machines able to read them now.
With the vast variety of weird things we use we will just be adding more and more riddles and puzzles for future archaeologists.

I would agree, unless there is a great disaster there is too much printed today to rely on. What we know of the past is from writings and the limitations have been how little was written. Today, everything is written about and many groups have left various time capsules, museum exhibits etc. If you assume that a great disaster occurs, then you would have to assume the new civilization has reached a level near our or greater. Then begin looking at remnants. Again, I think there would still survive a great amount of written and oral tradition.
