I lost 25 pounds in 6 months (in a really healthy way, I never starved myself). I have noticed that my period has drastically reduced and I am not on a pill. I have always been regular and never missed a period in my life. I am now trying to have a baby and I am concerned that having lost so much weight has potentially reduced my ability to ovulate or having regular period. Any ideas? thanks ladies

Yes, being underweight or too lean can cause cycle irregularities and affect your fertility.

Lean women have less free estrogen. Also, fatty tissue is a storehouse for sex hormones. Thirdly, in underweight women the hypothalamus, which is the part of the brain that controls the pituitary gland, does not properly stimulate the fertility hormones FSH and HL.

Regaining just a few pounds may restore your cycles to normal. See your physician or a specialist about what your ideal weight to height ratio should be and shoot for that goal.

If you are exercising too vigorously you will want to cut back on that, too. If you have lost an excessive amount of weight the book "Dr. David Reuben's Quick Weight Gain Program" might help.

"Ideal weight" by American standards may be much too low for good fertility.

Best of luck.

If you are at a healthy weight then it will only increase your chances. Being over weight can make it very difficult to fall pregnant the same as being very underweight. I assume seeing as though you said you lost it in a healthy way then you needed to loose the weight. I believe you did a good thing and it will help your chances at falling pregnant. Good luck
