first of all, do NOT, under any circumstances go to modeling school. you will waste your money, as you do not need it and they will not teach you anything.
the best place to get important info if you are new is, believe it or not, http://www.newmodels.com
it is really a good starting point, and they have great, truthful, unbiased info. :)
the main thing is: agencies. that should be your goal for the next few months. if you want to be VERY serious about modeling, and get lots of good work, then you pretty much have to get signed with an agency.
you may be too short for high fashion, but you can do commercial print. there will be some agencies that will take you, if you have strong/good looks.
how you get started is by getting some photos (either professional or not), and then emailing them, mailing them or going to the agency (aka "open call").
a good source for legit agencies is models.com.
what commercial agencies will want to see is commercial photos. pretty much the type of photos you will see here (on the right columns):
http://www.the-lightbox.com/commercial.htm
http://www.the-lightbox.com/lifestyle.htm
just you smiling and being a normal person. as you can see you don't have to be very tall. i actually know many models that are signed, and ARE 5'6''.
you are not too short for commercial print, and as long as you have good looks you will find work :)
if you go to the agency personally, and they decide to not take you, they will most likely give you some advice on what photos you need to bring next time, what other agencies you can go to, etc.
a great way of doing shoots to build your portfolio, is TFP, where photographer, model and usually the make up artist shoot for free in exchange for wonderful photos.
however you have to be REALLY CAREFUL and selective when it comes to the photographer. i would recommend networking sites like modelmayhem.com, but not onemodelplace.com.
if you find a photographer you like, you are more than welcome to email me through here if you have any questions, or an advice of wether to shoot with the photog or not.
i have had several girls contact me, and i give them more advice.
if you are under 18, let your parents know, since you won't be able to go to agencies or sign model releases without your mom/dad.
good luck sweetie! :)

It depends on the kind of modeling you want to do. Fashion? Commercial? Art? There are a lot of types out there. One thing you can do is start a profile on sites like modelmayhem.com. Fill out the information on there and see what kind of results you get. A lot of photographers prefer to work with inexperienced people because of the simple fact that it's a new face. You just have to be professional. A great way to build your portfolio is to do TFP/TFCD work. (Trading your time for copies of the photos...most photographers will give you a cd from the shoot to use as you see fit instead of paying you for your image.) Try that and see what happens!

it depends on where you live..cus different cities have different modeling agencies..just sign up for a class to model..i think they last probably 6 or 8 weeks but im not sure..after awhile if they like you they will offer you a modeling job (but thats only if its a place thats a modeling agency that also does classes) im not reallly sure what agencies are nation wide but ill list some well known ones from where i life and you can see if theres 1 near you
mayo hill
neal kamil (i have no idea if i spelled that right..sorry)
page parks
also you could hirer a photographer and have them do ur makeup and dress you up and take pictures and just take them to a model agency if they like you they wil ask you to do some work..if they dont then try somewhere else

find a well known agency and send some amature shots of you (preferably with a white backgrounnd) ...do a lot of research about the agency first before anythign....your height may be a problem because if i wanna get into high fashion modeling ...5" 9" would be at least they r looking for...and good luck..

Runway models are usually 5 ft 8 and taller. You can still do catalouge. Just go to an agent and they'll get you started.

go find yourself a photographer and ask him his opinion. not some loser either who is going ot tell you what you want ot hear to sleep with you. find a local pro and find out if you have a unique photogenic look. you must be new and unique to make it big unless you want to do slutty stuff. it would be nice if you are flawless in the face and under the age of 15 to be ideal for a serious model

Hey, I model for Elie and here are some tips:
Check out some agency websites(Elite, Ford, IMG, etc.). Send in a picture of your face and one full body(best in swimsuit), have your hair back, no make-up, and NO smile. 5'6 is only tall enough for petite modelling though.

Get professional photos taken of you to buil a portfolio if you really want to be a model.
But first you need to see if your face is symmetrical, or if any abnorlaties like your eyes are really far apart see if you can pull it off/model.
DX
Oh, and beware of the billions of scam agencies that waste your time and/or money.
