How about our independence? The citizens hated the high taxes of the king and our founding fathers led a rebellion! They essentially committed treason, but because they won, are now called patriots. They took advantage of a situation to put themselves in power! Don't get me wrong because I'm glad they did... The founding fathers are the standard. We have held them up on a pedestal ever since. Anything else pails in comparison.

When you're talking about politicians, it's easier to say who HASN'T taken advantage of something to make themselves look good. Thomas Jefferson had a long running battle with Alexander Hamilton, for example, and used rumor, inuendo, and fiscal problems to denigrate him. Quite a few folks attacked Abraham Lincoln's appearance and beliefs, along with the Civil War, to try and get him out of the presidency.

Reagan, Oliver North, John Singlaub, the 'Contras', and Cocaine.
Although none of this sounds good, there are many who look back upon this period of time and these events and speak favourably about it. The U.S. government sold arms to IRAN, supported terrorists against a popular and democratically-elected government in Nicaragua, and tried to paint Daniel Ortega as some Stalinist dictator. Take a look - Iran may be working on a nuclear bomb, and Ortega was just re-elected as President in Nicaragua a month ago.

George Orwell has a great quote "History is written by the winners."

In other words, we take EVERY opportunity to make ourselves look good at the expense of others ... it's human nature.
