the lowest common multiplier for dominators(8,6) is 24
so
7/8 * 3/3 - 5/6 * 4/4 because
8*3 = 24
6*4 = 24
21/24 - 20/24 = 1 / 24

a is correct because it will result in bothe fractions having the same denominator 24. 24 is the least common denominator of 8 and 6. 8= 2*2*2 and 6 = 2*3. So LCD = 2*2*2*3=24.
So when 7x/8 is multiplied by 3/3 we get 21x/24. And when
5x/6 is multiplied by 4/4 we get 20x/24. Now that the denominator is the same the two fractions can be subtracted giving x/24.
