To start with, PS3 games are a different kind of disk, incompatible with the PS2.
Second, while game makers do plan most games to run on all of the next gen counsels, only movie tie ends are designed for counsels of more than one generation to maximize sales. This is to get people who haven't bought the next system able to buy the game regardless of the system they own.
Third, it costs money to make games. LOTS of money, high budget games are expensive as developing a movie. Since a next generation game is NOT compatible with older counsels, you would have to develop two games at twice the price. (Movie tie-in games seem to be an exception, but most of those are pretty low-budget titles, using standard graphics engines and same-old same-old gameplay.)
Four, I was around during the original Nintendo age. No truely unique game that I am aware of has ever been across the generational gap from NES->SNES->N64->GC or the PS->PS2->PS3, or for that mater Gameboy->Gameboy Color->Gameboy Advanced->DS (The SP doesn't count because it was really a GBA with a different case.)(And I don't count Wii and GC movie tie-ins.)
Systems have always started pretty expensive. No one thought that the $200 PS2 would sell, but it did well enough to make the PS3 possible.
Yes, this does mean you have to buy as PS3 to play PS3 games. But history shows that system prices only go down over time, and game quality generally gets better too, as developers learn how to maximize their system.

dude get a better job then. Oh and by the way besides Oblivion. God of War2 which is for the PS2 is better than anything out for the PS3. I have every single game out so far for the PS3 and Oblivion isn't better it's about the same in sickness. so quit crying and play "God of War2.

this is very simple. y would they make a new system and then make games for the old system? i tht would b the same thing as xbox makin the 360 but makin xbox games.
why would they ever make a new system if they were only ever going to keep makin games for their old system. "hey evryone here is tht new system, but we rn't makin games for it instead we are going to keep makin games for the old system" come on, just think over your question again
