China is the worlds largest producer of wheat followed by India then the US. China grows 2 to 3 times the amound of the US. India grows about 1.5 to 2 times the US.

IF they adulterated the wheat, and the FDA's testing showed the melamine content at 6.6% by weight, that would be equivalent to finding 6.6 lbs of sand in a 100 lb sack of sugar, too much to be considered accidental in my mind.

The cost to the final distrabution of the imported wheat gluten was a savings of about 10 cents per pound over US prices. I don't believe that savings was passed on to the consumer though.

The question is "IF"

I would say - because the gluten could have just as well been used to prepare human food, we should carefully consider all options. They could destroy the united states [economically] for a while.. thats not what this country needs now.. we have enough economical problems.

However;

I also believe that a nation who would act in such manners has no right to expect a peaceful resolution in such a matter.

I don't believe they intentionally sent us poison wheat gluten. China has a terrible record with food quality. 13 Chinese babies died from the formula they produced because it contained little to no nutritional value. How many others came near to death?

We should not be trading food products with them because they do not adhere to proper inspection standards. In fact, they are very careless with it. This company has not admitted any negligence so far. I doubt that Menu Foods will recoup anything from this incident.

Why in the world would anybody in the USA buy WHEAT from a foreign country anyway?

You asked my next question. This is something that has been bothering me since the recall kept expanding the way it did.
Was it intentional? We may never know. Should we learn a lesson from this. YES Talk about a security breech. I hope no one would have that much unchecked power to poison us next.
Another thing is the amount of bad human foods infested with things like E. coli Is this something that is being highly overlooked by the USDA. Do they need overhauling.
The US needs to go back a few decades and look at what worked then. We didn't depend on other countries to supply us with outsourced imported goods.

satirically, confident it fairly is greater value-effective for companies interior the U. S. that would purchase wheat gluten to purchase it on the international marketplace than it fairly is for them to purchase it at dwelling house. it rather is why they do it. the biggest value of doing agency for almost ANY agency is paying workers, and the cost of paying them could be exceeded alongside to the buyer of the top product if the agency is to stay rewarding. finally, the reason products from China value under products from the U. S. is via the fact American workers are greedier! (that's no longer necessarilly a foul element, it fairly is merely the way it fairly is.)

Why is the US one of the biggest wheat producers in the world buying wheat gluten from China? should be the bigger question.

First we would have to prove they intentionally did it! That would be next to impossible to do.
We grow our own wheat, why are we importing it from China?
Why are we importing anything, what happened to making our own products? Oh, I forgot, companies can import it cheaper than they can buy it here & they can still charge us the same, if not higher, prices.

It'd be nice if we could have the restrictions on maufacturing put back - and make our own pet food here in the U.S.

Oh well- it's probably a test to see what'll happen if the food chain is disrupted

If it was intentional - maybe we should REALLY be making our things here...

Would not happen both countries have to much to lose. Besides just quit doing only certian kinds of trade with them is all that would happen.

I was just thinking the same thing. Even the President has animals that could have been affected. Very good question.
