He seems comfortable and it's not getting any worse. I waited to see what would happen when I found it 10 days ago on him. Then I cleaned out his cage and found dried blood on the inside of his little house. Is it a tumor? What is it??

Rats do not carry disease. They are domesticated pets.

Anyway, this animal needs to go to the vet. The "blood" most likely is porphyrin, which is secreated from the eyes and nose when there is an underlying problem. It could be an infection, etc. He may need antibiotics.

What kind of bedding is he on? Pine or cedar are toxic to rats and can cause porphyrin discharge.

10 days? You haven't taken him to the vet yet? It probably is a tumor but I haven't seen it. Pet rats are prone to tumors but they usually are benign. Get him to the vet, PS. How do you know he isn't in distress? Poor little rat.

sometimes if he is a differant coat type and it is only in one eye...it can be an eyelash. If it is one eye I would look into that first. If it is both eyes looks at your bedding and how often do you change it. Any ammonia can cause it. The red is similiar to our tears..or mucous. Shaz

Time to utilize the old flusheroo. It's a rat. They carry diseases. Go find a squirell or stick or something more pet-worthy, and quit poking your rat in the eye.
