I just got fired from my job after 11 years of service. Company is struggling and I was part of trimming the fat. I am sooooooo happy to begin a new experience. Can I send my ex-boss a thank you note or e-card. I feel I really should thank him, or is it in bad taste to do so???????? Crazy as it seems, I outgrew the company, wasn't happy with the new "policies and strategy and direction" they were going in and I felt that loyalties shifted to a very manipulative cut throat crew from an original "family" owned company. I'm fine and already have 3 job offers and will succeed even more because of this. Up until 5 months ago my boss was kinda like a big brother, but his dependencies and mis-management really tore us apart. Call me crazy, but I really want to thank him. Can I? Should I? Is it in bad taste to do so (repeating myself--sorry) - Please let me know your thoughts.

I would not send a "thank you for firing me" note because that will just come off as sarcastic.
You could say you appreciate the opportunity to have worked there 11 years and you now look forward to embracing new opportunities with all the skills you learned at that job. Ask if you can use him as a reference, even if you have other job offers now.
You can realize it was the best thing that ever happened to you, but don't actually say that to them--use whatever guilt they might have and parlay it into future references or something.
Good luck with your new opportunities and congrats for not wallowing in self pity and just picking yourself up and moving on!

A thank you note wouldn't be completely in poor taste, depending on how you construct it. You can thank him for the years of experience that led up to you being able to move on to something new and challenging in your future and indicate that you were more than ready for that. You don't want to offend your former boss so think carefully about what you say and how you say it, after all, you'll probably need him for a reference for your next job. In the mean time, you've built up a considerable amount of unemployment. If I were you, I'd use some of it, taking a relaxing break to enjoy having been fired! Good luck, whatever you do!

I just read the part about how you already have three job offers, so on second thought if you really want to say all the things that you mentioned above to your former boss, well then....
LET 'ER RIP!!!!
You've earned it! I only wish I could have been so lucky in some of the jobs I lost!

I saw a woman on Oprah who did that. She felt just like you. But, I would send him a note (not thanking him though), but telling him that you've appreciated working there all those years, but are excited about the new path you are now on and feel that in the end it was actually in your best interest to be let go. That way he will be glad to know there aren't any hard feeling, and perhaps he will be a great reference in the future. Good luck to you. New experiences are truly a rush!!

I wouldn't. Sounds like you were laid off rather than fired. Laid off basically means your position was no longer needed, but you did nothing wrong. Fired means you either couldn't do the job...or did something wrong on the job.
Either way...fired or laid off....it would be in very bad taste to send a thank you note.

If you would like to send one keep it brief and to the point:
"Thank you for the experience and opportunties that I have been given while employed with ABC Company. I appreciate all that I have learned while working here and will take many nice memories with me to my next career move.
I wish you well in the future and much success."
Something like that.

That was a blessing in disguise. You were lucky, it usually doesn't happen that way.
Send your former boss a thank you card letting him know how much you appreciated working for him, wish him the very best and include your new business card.
Don't mention your salary, which probably tripled.

Yes thank him in a letter and tell him how you feel about the situation. Don't burn a bridge, mend it if you can. If he was good to you let him know, he might not know.

I say do it.
Even if things tore you apart, it would still have been a difficult decision for him to have made if you were close at any point in time. I think he would really appreciate it.

How about not sending a card to thank him for laying you off, but a card thanking him for the opportunity to have worked with him?

If you do, you will have to write why you sent it.
Side, I though you can get managers done for unfair dismissal, not that you wanna go back of course.
