The very overly simplified version off the top of my head: At birth, all your primary follicles are present and used throughout your reproductive life. By puberty, those primary follicles mature develop into Graafian follicles. The ovary releases that mature follicle or "egg" into the fallopian tube.
For pregnancy to occur, spermatozoa are ejaculated into the vagina, travel through the uterus, and go into the fallopian tube. The sperm (if it makes it this far) will penetrate the egg. The egg will undergo a cortical reaction to insure other sperm do not penetrate the egg. The fertilized egg will travel through the fallopian tube and if it embedes on the uterine lining, pregnancy occurs. If the egg does not attach, the fertilized egg is lost through the vagina which is called spontaneous abortion.
The zygote (egg and sperm together) contain half of your mother's nuclear DNA, half your father's nuclear DNA, and 100% of your mother's mitochondrial DNA. To again simplify, your DNA sets up the code to make all your proteins (like your body parts). Mitochondrial DNA mostly programs your metabolism. That is why the egg produced from ovulation is important.

FYI: quick giving this person false information about a period. A period is the lining of the uterus sloughing off.

Conception is based on an intricate series of events.

Every month, hormones from your pituitary gland stimulate your ovaries to release an egg, or ovulate. This often happens around day 14 of the menstrual cycle, although the exact timing may vary among women or even from month to month.

Once the egg is released, it travels to the fallopian tube. If you want to conceive, now's the time. The egg has about 24 hours to unite with a sperm. Since sperm cells can survive in your reproductive tract for two to three days, it's best to have regular sex during the days leading up to ovulation.

If the egg is fertilized, it'll travel to the uterus two to four days later. There it'll attach to the uterine lining. You're pregnant! Your periods will stop as your body begins to support the embryo.

If the egg isn't fertilized, it'll break down and you'll have your next period as usual.

When you ovulate an egg is released from your ovary. Certain hormones change during your monthly cycle. About 1/2 way through a 28 day cycle (or 14 days before your period) an egg is released. The cervical mucus changes and gets thin and stringy. There is a small window of opportunity for the egg to get fertilized. The next few days, if fertilized, the egg travels through the fallopian tubes into the uterus and attaches. Your hormones also change to allow the pregnancy to "take".

When you ovulate the egg is released. The egg is good for up to 48 hours, after which it's no longer able to be fertilized. Sperm can live up to 5 days so sex 5 days before ovulation, up until 48 hours afterwards can result in a pregnancy.

Yes. When you ovulate your body releases the ovum (egg) & prepares itself for implantation (pregnancy), if there is no fertilization the ovum is expelled from your body (your period).
Not all pregnancies occur in the uterus - some can happen in the fallopian tubes - which have to be terminated - but you still have to ovulate.

Ovulation is when the egg is released into your fallopian tubes. Your body does this before every menstruation, and it is necessary for an egg to be there to conceive.
Now, promise me that you won't have sex for many years.
