no, nor do i think he was that brilliant! Noted for his time,,,,, creative, yes,,,,, but his view ,,,,
"that all existence is ultimately futile since it can be fundamentally characterized by a want of satisfaction that can never be attained"
to me, is not correct, nor is his opinion on women,,,,
he seems like a very eccentric person,,,,, which does not mean genius,,,,,,
i, being a woman, would not/could not, have a friend or be friendly with someone like that, nor would i even waste my time trying to defend my viewpoints to such a person,,,
ps: and for someone with such a dim view of females, he sure was attacked to young women,,, much younger then he,,,,,,,

Why not? I could be friends with anyone with whom I could have a spirited, intelligent, give and take conversation. Being a friend does not mean that the person must agree with everything you do. In fact, it could be an opportunity for you to show someone such as Schopenhauer the error of his ways, wouldn't that be an accomplishment!! i would welcome a friend such as this!!

The question is, can I be friends with anyone else????
My best friend is a troubled genius who epitomises misoginism and arrogance and snobbism. But I take valium and go for a talk because genius is the rare gift I treasure.

I don't know who he is. I pick my friends. Nobody else. My best friend in the world is someone who all of my other friends told me was a *****. After all these years, she's like my big sister and those who I thought were my friends I don't associate with.
