The Redlight district is in Kabuki-sho in Shinjuku. There are a number of standard bars and clubs along with the hostess bars (these offer shall we say, more mature entertainment) but the establishments in this area can be really expensive.

Another great spot for partying and night life is Roppongi. It is not quite as seedy a district as Kabuki cho (though perhaps it's close) and tends to be cheaper as well. You could also try Shibuya and Ginza though these are really more focused on Shopping and day time entertainment.

Finally, if you are at all interested in youth counter culture, Sunday night at Harajuku in Shinjuku is pretty crazy. Hundreds of youth dressed in all kinds of costumes come out and hang. There are also some bars and restaurants in this area too.

Shimokitazawa has some nice places for dining and imbibing.. If you want to go to an un-nice but "colorful" place try a joint like Gas Panic in Roppongi. Their rule is you must do some drinking if you want to hang out in their bar. If you want your oil changed try Kabukicho or Kawasaki.
