All this tosh about trade suffering is just that, tosh. The UK IMPORTS more from the EU than the EU IMPORTS from the UK. So who will suffer if the EU decides to break its own rules, those of the WTO and GATT, by starting a trade war? The EU would. The UK would again be allowed to negotiate its own Trade Agreements with other Nations, so that opens up markets closed by the EU because although the deals were in the UK's interest they weren't in the interests of the EU. The UK's biggest growth sector is with the non-EU economies, while the EU economies and Trade is falling. Does anybody think that EU car companies will stop selling to the UK, the EU owned Utility companies will give up their cash cows that are the water, gas, electricity, rail, aeroports, banks in the UK? As for the canard about abolishing Health and Safety etc, nobody in their right minds swallows that. The UK had Unionisation, Health and Safety at work etc when Union leaders and members were being shot in Spain, Italy and Germany. Nobody wants to return to Victorian practises at work, and only the fool wants to return to the days of Scargill and the militant tendency. Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty/Constitution states that there must be a Free Trade Agreement with a leaving member of the EU. So, unless you believe that the EU is a bunch of lying toe rags, there will still be free trade, and unless you believe that France, Germany etc want to remove a major market for their goods, a large part of their GDP (UK is Germany's largest market), in spite, there will be no 'trade war'. Even if there was, the UK is more able to weather it as it has control of its own currency and would be able to quickly negotiate trade agreements with the growing economies of China, Brazil, Canada etc. Finally, £50 million a day, £1.5 billion a month would be wiped off of Govt borrowing (the current cost of the EU) allowing a reduction in the deficit, a reduction plan for the debt, and therefore a more prosperous UK. I could go on, but just take in what I have said. No doubt there will be ample opportunity to visit these and other subjects in the run up to the nonexistent Referendum that Cameron is sure will never be delivered as he knows that he has already lost the next election.

Well sir,
I'm American and actually we came from Europe in the 1500-1600s remember? And I'm just 12 and I know too much, I watch the news CNN, Good day America the Cavuto Report, Larry King Live and tensions are growing, between the WORLD and America our economy shall drop dramatically and we shall be reduced rapidly from a superpower to nothing in 10 years, Britain will not befriend us anymore and well be a target and I'M American and I know Britain sticks up for us more you know that I'm sure if we had 15 troops stuck in that stupid Iran place Britain would act militarily but we didn't for them we should have. And Eastern EU cannot even support themselves, you expect them to support BRIT IAN! Of course the US loves the second most highest superpower in the world they must trust me. So I believe we are alot of a better allie than the EU is but in years to come we wont too much. most tensions are over Iraq war.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Few people believe Europe is a stronger ally than the US. Those who hate the US quite often hate Europe just as strongly.
However, this doesn't change the fact that Britain is a European nation, and that means we should have stronger ties with our neighbours. This doesn't have to be at the expense of the US, who is usually a good friend to the UK - though it doesn't seem to be that way at the moment, what with your rules on extradition (US can demand extradition immediately from the UK, but the UK has to go through a length process to get the return from the US) for instance. However, this is by far the exception rather than the rule. I don't generally have a problem with Americans or Europeans. You can't have too many friends after all.

Dude, as much as I love you guys too, an I do, you screw us just the same as the E.U. from steel and industry to extraditing our bankers that broke No U.K. law. So as much as you can say the E.U.'s no good for us, (BTW, WE KNOW) thats why we get cussed for picking an choosing, pretty soon we'll be stuck in the middle getting no love from either. Not that we get a lot now.
Your only a true ally when you need help on the world stage, I mean even WW2 was touch an go wasn't it, or are we forgetting the arms supplies you graciously loaded into German vessiles that reached your shores? What was that subs name again???
But anyway moving on, your point of view has somewhat of a slant \\\ You constantly change history through hollywood, for the record.... NO AMERICAN ever tryed to escape from Colditz, it was the R.A.F. an NO AMERICAN intercepted the enigma machine, that was the Navy.
I'm not being two faced dude, an I still would agree that we are indeed allies, but better than Europe? I need some convincing.

As a lifelong Socialist and a pink leftie, I must tell you that at no time ever in my life, not even after all the snarling and back stabbing that goes on between us, have I ever doubted the people of the United States.
The American people are not just a bunch of Yanks. In many cases they are directly related to us in blood - they are in effect 'family'.
We are two nations separated by a common language. Because we are major democracies, we can afford to be rude, vulgar and downright bloody minded on any issue about which we do not agree. We will eventually reach some sort of muddled compromise deal to solve the problem, whatever it was we were all screaming about.
Now please stop worry about loonie lefties here in UK. Such people in my experience are Middle Class, never get their hands dirty and have no real connection with the working class of which I am a member.
Why have Americans forgotten their socialist history? Yes, they do have one but it's been hidden from view by the 'rightists'.
The only real benefit for the UK of being a member of the EU is that we can all hate each other in complete safety. The Germans are unlikely [ not even in a nightmare] to send out a one thousand bomber raid on London. Not yet anyway.

Luckily most of us don't want anything to do with the EU or Europe (latest polls show about 80% want LESS ties with the EU)
Most think our links with the US a good thing.
Although I will say you don't always support us, the Falklands is a good example, you denied our bombers landing rights, so they had to divert to chille and ended up aborting the mission, otherwise the Union flag would probably be flying over Buenos Aires now!
But apart from that I think you'll always support us, and we'll always support you.

You must be George Bush on a drunk.
I"m American but really count myself more as Southern than American. If you're trying to win friends in Britain on the left, right or middle, you're doing a pretty poor job. I might rhyme the quality of your diplomatic skills with hiss poor.
The way I read it, your post says "If you don't like Us Americans, we'll stop supporting you and you'll sink beneath the waves."
I think your post is more of a jab than a sincere question of one country's friendship and loyalty to another. It's an insult to the British as a whole and an insult to the American people who are out there fighting for your right to print this silly stuff you've written.
This is one of the things wrong with America, people being arrogant. I think when you're speaking to the "REAL BRITS" out there and say America loves you, you're really just wanting some nose rubbing and butt kissing.

There is a secret treaty absolute between the US and the UK government back in WW II. That means where the US GI goes, the Brit boots must follow, That includes Vietnam.
So, what is the worry?

Thanks - we don't really regard Britain as European anyway. We just keep getting sold out to them by Blair.
If it wasn't for American pressure they'd (the British Marines) still be staying at the Tehran Hilton rather than selling their stories to the highest bidder.
That's actually the most nauseating thing about the episode - maybe we should send them back to Iran.
