Depends on the model of diesel or gas. Some diesels have been very unreliable, and some have been great. Same goes for gas. As a general rule, a diesel will last longer. I've seen Mack diesels with upwards of 1 million miles and still running.

With proper care, a diesel will usually last longer and get better fuel mileage. I have seen diesels at 500,000 without major problems, but they were all highway miles, and they were serviced religiously.

That said, you can get 300,000 + out of a gasoline engine with the same kind of care.

Let me go with the diesel. They may cost more for the maintenance but the engines seem like they roll forever.

You get better mileage as a bonus.

A Ford Econoline E350 with powerstroke diesel will give you over 750K miles with regular maintenance, that's why fleets use them.
