Because in the old days, meat was considered a luxery food. So you deny yourself luxery in order to remember the suffering of Christ.

Most of all this is tradition, not based on any real theology, as near as I can find out. Eastern Orthodox Christians are not " supposed" to eat at all on Good Friday or the the next day. Roman Catholics have a tradition of fasting and abstinence on Good Friday. The only day that meat itself is mentioned is the RomanCatholic tradition of no meat on the friday of lent. And, Catholics traditionally eat fish on Good Friday.

We should never eat meat. Poor animals, scared and abused are killed so we can eat them! I read a story about pigs that were being skinned alive because the people that kill them are crazy and like blood and torturing. Also a cow that didn't want to be put in a truck away from her baby to go get slaughtered was pulling away from the truck, they tied a rope around her and dragged her by the truck until the rope broke. Left with the other cows to slaughter them and she layed in the road dying in pain (they beat her as well) until someone driving stopped to help, they put her to sleep. WE SHOULDN'T EAT MEAT!

My mother told me when I was little that it was wrong to eat meat on this day because it was the day Jesus was crucifix ed. I guess it's the blood thing, he bled the meat bleeds sort of thing.
