Dean Koontz, especially his earlier work is a bit on the horror side. Like "House of Thunder" "Mr. Murder" and other gems.

Don't read Patricia Cornwell unless you like being patronised. She writes as a technophobe telling an IT consultant how to use a computer - she knows less than the average person, but imagines herself an expert. She leaves glaring errors in her novels(like a gymnast who has hit puberty), steadfastly refuses to tie up loose ends, and all in all tells her very interesting stories as if she can't quite remember which bits were important when she first heard them from whoever came up with them in the first place.

Read Tess Gerritsen. She can be breederific, but other than that she is pretty damn no-nonsense and a joy to read.

Dean Koontz has a bit of both and of course Stephen King.
Charlaine Harris has a new series out called 'Grave sight'

If you like horror, try some of the real classics, such as Poe, Guy de Maupassant, and some of the gothic novels also - if you check out that section on Amazon you'll find lots!

News of the world. Its not a book but with the deaths in America and Iraq and the possibility of Iran building nuclear weapons, its pretty horrible, and full of mystery.

Try RH Stavis, Scott Nicholson, Robert McCammon, Doug Clegg.

OR type in their names (christie, clark, etc,) on Amazon, and poke around until they pop up "other recommendations"
