Remember those negative numbers in algebra? That's sorta what the BC numbers are--they get less and less as the years roll by, just as the AD numbers get higher and higher. So, Plato apparently lived about 80 years. -428-(-348)

yes!
it's before christ, so 348BC is sooner than 428BC
when it's BC we move opposite
so Plato lived for 428-348= 80 years

Think of the years as negatives, 428 b.c is 428 years before christ. 348 is a later year since its only 348 years before christ (getting closer to zero). He was 80 years old according to this

In the West, history is measured by denoting if an event happend before the birth of Christ (B.C.) or after the birth of Christ (A.D., which is an abbreviation for anno domini meaning "in the year of our lord").
Starting with the birth of Christ in 1 A.D. we measure years counting forward to where we are now, 2007. Immediately proceeding 1 A.D. is 1 B.C. and we count backwards as we go farther into history. So, if counting backwards 348 BC happens after 428 BC.

BC means 'before Christ', so if we start counting then at 0, everything found later, which we know occured 'before Christ', we had to date backwards...imagine the dates, the BC, as if you had a number line with negative numbers...-428...-348...0....348....428.

BC is before Christ. This is a theoretically day that people believe that Jesus Christ was born. We are now in 2007 AD (Anni Domini), or 2007 years after Christ was born.
Christ was born technically in year -1, or 1 BC (if he was born on Christmas Day and we have the year right). The year before that was year -2, or 2 BC, and so on.
There is no year zero. Before 1, there was -1 (they were superstitious against 0 when they made our present calender). Just think of the years BC as negative years.

I do not get your question? According to you, he died at the age of 80 years. Is that what you are getting at? Or the B.C. If that, then, it means via our time dating system, he was born 428 years before Christ and died 348 years before Christ. Minus is before Christ, positive is after Christ.

BC means how many years before Christ was born. 1 BC is one year before Christ was born, and 428 BC was 428 years before then.

In anytime BC, smaller numbers are more recent. This means he was 81 years old when he died which is a bit old for that time period but not impossible.
