A few months is as far back as System Restore will go, unless you want your hard drive space to be totally used up by restore points.

Reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows ought to do the trick. If you have the CDs that came with your computer, look for one that says something like "Factory Restore" or "Operating System Reinstallation." Boot off of that CD, and you'll be off and running.

You should have some System Restore DVDs that came with your system. These DVDs will be what you need to set up your computer like it was brand new from the store. You will want to look for the one that says System Software or Windows XP on it. When you find these disc, simply put them into the DVD drive. Shut down your computer. Then turn it back on with the DVD still in the drive. It should prompt you to press Enter to start from the DVD. Press Enter and Follow the install instructions. Good Luck, I hope this has helped.

Best thing is to first (and most importantly), make sure you have the System restore disks. I used to have a Dell (don't remember what model) and if I'm not mistaken, the disks contain software to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

**Reformatting the hard drive will wipe out everything on it. So if you have files you want to save, you will have to copy them to a CD, floppy disk, or other media.

run your system restore disk. this will delete everything.
If you dont have it, then get a disk wiping program and windows xp full.
wipe the disk, and re-install xp.
remember, full edition. (usually marked as for pcs without windows, or with windows 95 or earler.
