Yes and No. Many years ago MG, Jaguar,Rover, and Triumph were all part of British Leyland, later called JRT. Then they were sold off individually until today when no one knows from one day to the next who owns what. Today Ford owns Land Rover and the Nanjing Automobile owns MG.

They used to be the same company.
They were separated in 2000 - BMW owned Rover, MG, Mini and Land Rover (who build the Range Rover) their factories at Oxford (Cowley), Longbridge, Solihull and Swindon, and a development facility at Gaydon. BMW sold the MG brand and the rights to use the Rover brand to MG Rover, along with the MG and Rover car designs, and the Longbridge factory. They kept the Oxford and Swindon factories, and the Mini brand (and the new Mini designs), and sold Land Rover, the Solihull factory and the Gaydon facilities to Ford.

When MG Rover collapsed in 2004 the only effect on Land Rover was that the 2.5-litres v6 petrol engine for the Freelander was no longer available (it was shared with the Rover 75).

Ford recently bought the Rover brand from BMW to prevent any other company (specifically Shanghai Automotive, who had offered to buy it) from using it.

No - they are not the same company. Land Rover / Range Rover was a UK company but then was sold to Ford. MG Rover went bankrupt and was bought by a Chinese company. The Chinese company will be manufacturing MG Rovers in 2007.

They all were the same company once, but have since all been traded off as individual names. I think Ford now owns the rights too land and range rover brand names. Not sure who has the mg brand.
