it can also mean a balance between mind, body and soul. it can symbloize protection. each of the elements is assigned to a triangle that is either upright or upside down, with or without a line through it.

It represents many things. Amoung other things already stated here, it also shows that when 2 seperate things come together, they create a 3rd distinct thing. Triangle pointing upward has to do with the spiritual realm while a triangle pointing downward has to do with the material, mundane world

With the tip pointed down, it represents the Goddess, with it upright, if represents the God....It can also represent the 3 fold nature of the God/dess, as creator, preserver, and destroyer.
(there are other meanings as well, that is just a couple off the top of my head...)
