WASHINGTON - The top aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales abruptly quit on Friday, almost two weeks after telling Congress she would not testify about her role in the firings of federal prosecutors.

"I am hereby submitting my resignation to the office of attorney general," Monica M. Goodling said in a three-sentence letter. There was no immediate reason given, but her refusal to face Congress had intensified a controversy that threatens Gonzales' job.

Asserting her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, Goodling had rejected demands for a private interview with a House committee investigating the firings.

They just announced on CNN that Gonzalez's job is safe. That means he'll be gone in about 2 weeks. If you listened to the testimony, especially about Lam, you know something was wrong with the reasoning in firing the U.S prosecuting attorneys. Smells of Karl Rove to me.

Yes, the rating of the pres will remain the same no matter what happens. Nixon still had 28% when he resigned.

The 30% would approve of him even if he were revealed to be a sweet transsexual transvestite from Transylvania (there are rumors of that, ya know).

I can't say I'm surprised about old Alberto's sidekick, leaving in typical Bush Adminstration style with a little snit and a terse letter, and praying like mad for Scott Fitzgerald to not get her indicted.

She'll face a subpoena and then she'll have no choice but to testify or go to jail. Perhaps she quit to free herself up to actually tell the truth rather than simply plead the 5th. Or could be a deal of immunity for her testimony in the works also?

She is setting herself up as the loyal Bushie escape goat. Was probably promised 22 virgin men if she takes the fall to divert attention from Alberto Gonzo Gonzales.

I have a hard time understanding how anyone with any amount of intelligence would not be able to see this for the political "scandal" that it is. The Democrats clearly are keeping their word to "investigate, investigate, investigate"

The reason is so simple. Buy doing these "investigations", they are arousing their base and hope to capitalize on that in the next election.

You have to have short memories to forget that the Republicans did the exact same thing when they had the chance. There are no scandals. There is not real outrage. There are no smoking guns....this is politics!

wow what a surprise - another high ranking ss officer resigns amid another fallout - lets see you have powell - wolfowitz -rumsfeld - etc etc etc - when is this president going to realise that the american people dont want him or cheney in office and wont be happy until they are gone - when 90 percent of the top aides you started with have moved on to other jobs or resigned or gone to jail you must say to yourself OK I am lucky none of this stuff has touched me - I better resign before my luck runs out - I guess greed and power are very hard vices to give up .

Interesting!

But does this belong in the "scandel de jour" category or the "rats deserting sinking ship" category? LOL!

Who cares? Bush's approval rating doesn't mean anything. He could fall down to 1% and we'd still be stuck with him. Besides, if you get rid of Bush, you've just got Cheney to deal with.
